How it works

Set up PDF4me in n8n.

The PDF4me dashboard, API Calls & Key page, showing the Primary and Secondary keys
01

Get your free PDF4me API key

Create a free PDF4me account, open the dashboard and go to API Calls & Key. Copy your Primary Key – this is what authenticates every PDF4me step in n8n. No credit card is needed to start.

02

Open n8n and create a workflow

Sign in to n8n – the cloud version or your own self-hosted instance. From the Overview screen, click Create Workflow to start a new one, or open an existing workflow you want to add document steps to.

Add the PDF4me node

On the canvas, click the + to add a node and type “PDF4me” in the search. Select the PDF4me node, then choose the operation you need – for example Create Barcode, Convert to PDF or Merge PDFs.

Connect it after a trigger

PDF4me runs as an action, so wire it after a trigger. Use the manual “When clicking Execute workflow” trigger to test, then switch to a real one later – a webhook, a schedule, or a new file in Google Drive, Dropbox or S3.

05

Add your credential, configure and run

In the node’s “Credential to connect with” field, choose Create New and paste your PDF4me API key – n8n saves it for every PDF4me node. Pick the Action, fill its fields (for a barcode, the text and type), then click Execute step and check the output.

Why teams run PDF4me in n8n.

124 operations, one node

Convert, merge, split, OCR, e-sign, watermark, compress, barcode, parse and generate documents from a single PDF4me node. 124 operations across 18 categories cover most document work without wiring several services together.

One credential, every workflow

Connect PDF4me once with an API key credential and reuse it across every workflow. No per-node setup and no OAuth flow to maintain.

Runs after any trigger

The PDF4me node is a regular action node, so it slots into workflows started by a webhook, a schedule, a new file in Google Drive, Dropbox or S3, an email or a database row.

Cloud or self-hosted, your call

The node works the same on n8n Cloud and on a self-hosted instance, so you keep workflows and file data on your own infrastructure while PDF4me does the processing over the API.

AI document parsing

Pull structured fields from invoices, receipts, bank statements, contracts, payslips and tax forms, then map them straight into the next node with n8n expressions.

Barcodes and e-invoicing built in

Generate and read Code128, QR and Swiss QR bill codes and build ZUGFeRD e-invoices inside a workflow. Handle these formats without adding a separate node.

Convert incoming files to PDF

Trigger on a new file in Drive, Dropbox or S3, convert Word, Excel, HTML or a URL to PDF, and store the result back automatically.

See the docs

Parse invoices with AI

Read totals and line items from incoming invoices with the AI parser, then push the structured fields to a sheet, a database or an ERP.

See the docs

Merge PDFs in a workflow

Collect several documents, merge them into one PDF, then email it or save it to storage without any manual combining.

See the docs

Split a scan by barcode

Split one scanned batch into separate PDFs by barcode, then route each file to the right folder or recipient.

FAQ

Answers before you install.

Is PDF4me a trigger or an action in n8n?
PDF4me is an action node. It runs after a trigger node such as a webhook, a schedule, a new file in Google Drive, Dropbox or S3, an email, or a database row. See the PDF4me node on n8n.
Do I need n8n Cloud, or can I self-host?
Either works. PDF4me runs the same on n8n Cloud and on a self-hosted n8n instance, so you keep your workflows and data on your own infrastructure if you prefer.
How do I add the API key?
Create a free PDF4me account, copy your key from the dashboard API Keys, then add it once as a PDF4me credential in n8n. The getting-started guide walks through it.
How is PDF4me billed?
PDF4me is billed by API usage, separate from n8n. You start free with no credit card and pay only as your volume grows, while n8n stays free to self-host or on its own cloud plan.
Which triggers can start a PDF4me workflow?
Any n8n trigger. Common ones are a webhook, a cron schedule, a new or updated file in Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox or S3, a new email, a form submission, or a new database row. PDF4me operations run after the trigger fires.
Is there a free tier or usage limits?
Yes. You can start free with no credit card and test the operations before you commit. Higher volume moves you onto a paid PDF4me tier, metered by API usage.
